I am NOT a vet or a professional when it comes to treating animal injuries. I have learned a lot through research and put much of that research to use and found out what works for my animals! If you are unsure of anything it is always best to consult a professional vet.

We have had eye injuries from duck to chicken. Usually some time in the day or at night we will spot a swollen eye, abscessed eye, etc. We are never sure how these occur, but after our duck had an abscessed eye several years ago we now have our favorite treatment. At the end of this post, I have a more detailed plan for our duck.

We use terramycin. It’s an antibiotic ointment for the eye. It’s a clear, thick gel kind of. Reminds me of neosporin. Supposedly, this ointment can actually be used on many different animals. Right now I use it on my chickens and ducks.

I always apply the ointment to the infected/injured eye at night when it’s time for everyone to go up.

Terramycin can be bought at any feed store like Tractor Supply. It can also be bought on Amazon. It’s about $27. It’s a lot but I think it’s worth it! Terramycin can be found where other care items for livestock are at the feed store.

Years ago, our duck had an abscessed eye and lost vision in that eye. This year that eye got a really bad eye infection. The eyeball was grossly swollen with a huge scab on it. Sometimes the eye was draining. We put the duck and her sister in another pen away from the chickens. I kept with changing the water a couple of times a day. I added electrolytes and vitamins to the water. In the beginning I just put on terramycin and it seemed like it was stopping the drainage. However, the swelling wouldn’t go down! For her, I ended up spraying vetericyn on her eye once in the day and once at night. At night after I sprayed her eye with vetericyn then I put the terramycin on the middle of the eye and around the eyelid. Finally the swelling went down.

I hope this post helps you! Remember if you’re not sure on the right way to care for your duck or chicken, take your duck or chicken up to your local vet office. They will usually see the animal or at least tell you where you can take the animal to be seen! We did this with our office and they treated our animals.

**There has been talk, going back several years, that terramycin will one day be pulled and the only way to purchase it will be with a prescription from the vet. I hope this doesn’t happen but just FYI.**
