Wait today is Saturday not Friday! 🤔 I decided to go ahead and finish this post and get it published! I had started the other day but life happened so didn’t finish it!
Earlier this month we have had bald eagles coming into the yard! I have not been able to get a clear picture of them. Hopefully I will get one! I got some video of it flying around, above the house. I went outside, startled it (it startled me 😂) and was able to get it flying away. I had my phone in my pocket because I thought the eagle was gone, but it had been perching on a tree in the very back of the yard.
Then on another night I caught a possum in the brush! I didn’t take video but I got a picture. The possum ended up climbing up a tree. To me it’s a baby, lots of fluff around it. Super cute! I haven’t seen it since and the chickens haven’t been squawking about it either.
We had so much rain a few days ago! With the rain we also had a duck with an inflamed eye! Years ago, the duck went blind in that eye. No problems until now. When it rained, it rained ALL day long until the evening! I don’t know if the duck got cold because she wasn’t able to preen and oil herself up properly, making her water resistant. Usually you will see the ducks rubbing their head on their body, this is making their feathers water resistant. I could tell that she was cold, feathers looked really wet and her good eye looked squinty. Thankfully, it had stopped raining. She looked the same as our drake when he passed. I ended up putting down lots of new straw, put ointment onto her eye, gave her warm water with electrolytes and vitamins. I also gave her warm peas on top of the regular food. She did bounce back and has been okay!
A couple of days ago, it got super windy. We had to pull the green house cover off because it almost blew away! Then yesterday morning was in the 40s and as the day went on the temperature dropped and it became super windy again! Puddles and latches were frozen. We let everyone free range and I noticed one chicken was not doing well so we brought her inside.
She is molting and with the temperature drop, I don’t think she could adjust her body temperature. We brought her and another chicken that is molting inside. After warming her back up she is doing a lot better!
It dropped down to single digit last night and was still really windy. Everyone is fine this morning though! We had one rooster crowing at 5am and everyone else was quiet 😂. Usually they start crowing about 3am. This morning started off as a nice chilly 9 degrees with a slight breeze. The sun is out but it is still cold! 🥶
Thank you for reading! I hope everyone has a great weekend and a merry christmas!
