It’s been awhile since I had posted! Didn’t realize so much time had passed since the last post.

We have had chickens, ducks, and goats for several years now. We have been really blessed with no much going on, maybe an injured/sick animal here or there. No big deal. The end of last year and this beginning of this year have been something else.

In the last post, the possum had a chicken by the head which resulted in that hen passing. During my ‘posting’ absence, the possum attacked again. This time I had taken care of a hen for 3 weeks before she passed. Also during those three weeks, the possum came back a several times. We eventually shot it. We’ve had lots of possums over the years but this one was becoming problematic.

Then we had a chicken become what I thought was eggbound. Eggbound is when the egg gets stuck and the chicken is unable to lay it. We gave her epsom salt bath, upped on calcium through oyster shell and tums. Still no egg. She lasted about a week before passing. I believe she had egg yolk peritonitis, which is when the egg ends up in the intestines. One sign is the chicken will have egg yolk coming out and she did. 😨 I thought whatever it was, she was getting over it because she started to have more solids in the diarrhea.

Now we have a chicken that is walking on a foot with a toe bent to the side. The stranger part is when I noticed her having involuntary movements while on her perch. A couple of years ago we had a chicken walking backwards, jerking her head around. Here is the youtube video if you want to check it out.

The way I treated the chicken in the above video was the same way I treated this chicken. I fed chicken tuna fish from a can and put electrolytes with vitamins in the water a few nights and the weird movements stopped. Her toe doesn’t bend like it did either…just once in a while. The electrolytes I like to use for water is Rooster Booster (paid link*).

That’s all that is going on with the animals! We have vegetable plants growing. Our Rosemary and Basil plants are doing real well, on an older post I had killed the ones previously but these are going strong.

We also got an Olive tree and a Meyer Lemon Tree which is pictured below. I bought a couple of Shortcake Raspberry bushes but I didn’t take pictures because they are just sticks right now 😂. These are all plants that can be planted into small planters and be kept on the porch.

We are pretty much done patching up the green house. We patched any holes or tears with Gorilla water resistant tape (paid link*). There might be still a little hole here and there. Then I have to get a new zipper for the door since the old one rotted and fell off. I guess they are pretty cheap zippers. We’ve had a few heavy rains and storms, the tape has held up well so far! We should have a video coming out soon of fixing the green house, stay tuned.

We also got chicks! We got 9 rhode islands, 8 white leg horns, and 4 ameraucanas.

Rhode Islands and Leg Horns are outside in the brooder attached to a bigger coop.
The Ameraucanas are inside the office in a brooder. So fluffy and cute!

I think that about covers it. Thanks so much for reading and have a great weekend!
