We recently had to treat a chicken with congestion. This was the first time we ever had this problem!

I’m not a professional or a vet. To me it sounded like the chicken had some sort of respiratory infection. She had a stuffy nose and chest congestion. That’s as best as I can describe it! When I held her, she would spit out mucous/saliva. Gross. I know. I have a video posted below, be sure to watch it so you can hear and see.

I did a lot of research and decided to try VetRX. It’s a clear ointment in a brown bottle packed in a bright yellow box! 😎 Can’t miss the box! 😅

It was about $17 at Tractor Supply and $26 on Amazon. I ordered it on Amazon because it wasn’t coming up on Tractor Supply website. It was really weird! Jacob found it there and sure enough it was on the website! I may not have typed in VetRx right. Who knows, but it’s just an FYI.

You can do a lot with this ointment. You can spread it on topically, put it in the bird’s mouth, mix it with water to use as a spray, put it into food, etc. It comes with directions listing several ways to use it.

I ended up just putting it on topically. I rubbed it onto the hen’s comb, on and under her nostrils, under her eyes, and under the wings.

Along with putting the ointment on, I made her a special dinner. It was a raw egg yolk with cayenne pepper and chicken pellets with some corn.

I did this every night for about 10 days. During the day she drank water with electrolytes.

By day 8, she was clearing up. Day 9 she was making clucking noises again. She sounded like a normal chicken! I think she still needed a few more days to get rid of whatever she had. Unfortunately, we found her dead about two hours after I had checked up on her.

She had been staying in the back of the yard. For whatever reason, she decided to come up to the house. Another hen picked a fight with her, relentlessly attacked the congested chicken. This resulted in the chicken dying.

I know she wasn’t 100% better but she was getting there. She sounded clear that morning. I didn’t hear the congestion in the chest or the stuffy nose.

I do talk about the other hen attacking her in the video.

If your chicken has what mine has give VetRx a try. I think it is a great product. If this problem arises again I will use it again.
