Our baby goats are almost 8 weeks old! I can’t believe how fast they have grown and how quickly time has gone by!

A lot of people usually have already made the decision whether or not to keep their baby goats. Usually people let their goats go at the age of 8 weeks as long as they are weaned from mom and eating grain and hay. Sometimes people let the baby goats go sooner which they become known as bottle babies.

Besides keeping the goat, you need to decide whether you are going to dehorn the goats. The second consideration is neutering the male.

Did you know that males can be fertile starting at 7 weeks old!? I didn’t know until we had met our buck’s owners!

First of all, all of our goat kids are girls/does! We have decided to keep these so we would have a total of 6 does. When we milked Hazel we were only getting 3 Cups of milk a day. In reality for our family we need two milking goats. Then again it does depend on how much milk the goat gives.

Hopefully, if everything works out, we can have two does in milk at a time. How long will we milk the goats for? Not sure! Some people milk for about a year. We milked Hazel for almost 7 months.

We made the decision to not dehorn. We haven’t had any problems with our does Hazel, Ava, Snow Nugget, or our wether Yoshi being aggressive. We don’t plan on showing the goats either. I haven’t seen these gotas be aggressive, only BB8. I have seen him head butt then try to scoop up the other goat with his horns. If females were like that they would definitely get dehorned! Our wether, Yoshi, is calm and acts like the does. Can this calmness of my does and wether be the same for all the goats? No. We ended up with goats that have good temperaments. Will these baby goats grow up to be the same? I sure hope so!

Since we have decided to keep them we have to get another trough for hay. The goat house for now is okay but may need to be expanded in the future. However, we do have plans to move them into another area of the yard.

As always I will keep you updated! Thanks for reading! 🙂
